Sisters are brewing it for themselves
March 8th 2015 saw over 100 Brewsters from 11 counties gather together in breweries around the world to brew the same ‘Unite Red Ale’ recipe on the same day. (Brewster is the name given to women brewers) The recipe parameters were 4.6% red ale hopped with Willamette for a spicy, blackcurrant aroma. All brewsters and other beer loving women were encouraged to become involved to raise funds for charity and of course to have fun on brew day and help to spread the word about the wonderful world of beer.
Sophie de Ronde, Brewing Technologist at Muntons and member of Project Venus UK & Eire, came up with the idea back in 2013 for a unified collaboration brew day in conjunction with International Women’s Day. The goal was to raise awareness of women in the brewing industry and raise funds for local charities and Pink Boots Society (PBS). PBS is a nonprofit organisation with the goal of empowering women in the beer industry through education. Members are regularly given opportunities for beer related scholarships and funds garnered from IWCBD assist with these scholarships. Sophie got in touch with PBS for help getting brewsters of PBS involved.
This year the event attracted the likes of St Eriks Bryggeri, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and Cigar City Brewing among a host of others who brewed Unite Red Ale. It was also humbling to have so many returning participants from USA, UK, New Zealand, Australia, and Japan.
2014 saw just over 70 participants from 9 counties sign up to brew Unite Pale Ale. Participants are supplied with a Unite recipe, artwork for packaging, posters etc. and encouraged to promote their role in the largest collaboration brewing event on the planet. Some heavy hitters in the brewing industry signed up for the first brew in 2014, helping to put a spotlight on the event which included Stone Brewing Co., Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, Ballast Point Brewing, Brewsters and Adnams Brewery among others. Many were sponsored by and received donated hops and malt which assisted in more profits being available for breweries to donate. To view a map of participants,
In honour of the day, Sophie has brewed her own Unite Red at the bespoke Muntons 1hL pilot plant, producing 150 x 500ml bottles. These bottles will be raffled off in April with the proceeds going to PBS and their own designated charity East Anglian Air Ambulance.
